How To Program A Ford Key With Only One Key

What happens when you want to program a new key when you only have one?

In the second one, you do it yourself and get to save time and money in doing so. If you are interested in adding some DIY skills to your name, here is an exciting way to go about this.

The Issue

You may buy a car and find that it only comes with one key. Or it could have more, and you end up losing the spare one. The last thing you want is to lock yourself out of your car. If this happens, you will have much more to worry about than the cost of a key.

In most online resources, you will find that you can program a new key. But to do so, you would need two programmed keys. And if you do not have two keys, there is the other option that most people try to avoid. You could always contact the dealer and spend some good money on the same.

Making the Key

The good thing is that there are many options on the market. Thus, there is no reason to limit yourself in your search. But before getting to this, you should find out what would work for you. And all this is regarding compatibility. Once you understand what you need, you can then head to online stores and get what you need.

In most cases, a key will set you back ten bucks or thereabout. It is much cheaper as compared to relying on your dealer for the same. Getting two keys is a great idea. In this way, you will have two spare keys to use in case of anything. Buy the keys and get them cut as you gather the tools that you will need for the next step.

What Tools do you Need?

Ford key programming tools are as follows. For one, you will require an ELM327 Bluetooth OBDII Adapter. The name may have you thinking that it is quite a sophisticated tool, but that is not the case. These tools are readily available, and they come at affordable prices.

If you use online stores, you should not spend more than ten bucks on them. Plus, you can have them delivered straight to your door, saving you the hassle of heading to the store.

In the case of this adapter, you have many options so you can see what works best for you. Wired options are also viable. And you can get the WIFI options which work with iProducts.

The other tool you will need is a PC with Bluetooth. The second option in this regard would be to have a wired adapter wired to the PC or WIFI. Again, it will depend on the best option for you, so be sure to approach this with an open mind.

The third tool is the FORScan OBII software for the PC. In this regard, it is essential to note that iPhone and Android versions of this will not offer you the same capabilities you need for this programming. However, that is not to say that they cannot help in this process.

But we will discuss this later in the process to give you an idea as to how you can work with their features. On the same note, you should know that only a BETA version of this will help in the programming. The other versions, though available, may prove difficult or impossible to use.

The fourth requirement is FORScan’s extended license. Note that this is free at the moment. However, this may change over time, and it is thus advisable to get in on the deal while it lasts.

When they start charging, you may have to put up a couple of bucks to get the service. But it will not be close to what you would incur when getting this service from a dealer. Thus, it is still a bargain.

The fifth requirement is access to a website. You will need this site to decode the outcode such that you can turn it into an incode. If this feels complicated, do not worry as there are detailed instructions as to the same.

And you can find them within FORScan, where the service is free as at now. And last but not least, you will need the original key as well as the new cut keys. Once you have all this in place, you can get started on the process.

How to Program Dodge Key With Only One Key

You will note that there has been an emphasis on the use of FORScan. Before we get into the process, it is crucial to outline the reasons behind this preference. For one, you can use it to monitor OBDII sensors.

Also, it allows you to access all cars, which may not be possible in other software. While this software works for Ford, it also works for other vehicles such as Mazda, Mercedes, and Lincoln. Thus, if you have issues with your keys and you have these vehicles, you can use the same process to fix the problem.

Given that the software works for a broad range of cars, it comes with the available PIDs on the market. Thus, you do not have to worry about the addition of individual PIDs. Additionally, it is easy to use and will not give you a hard time.

You can access it through your phone and tablet. Plus, if you get the windows version, you are set when it comes to PATS programming, which is what you will need when programming the new key. You can now see the importance of this software and why the emphasis is so much.

The first trial may not be as smooth as you are likely to face a couple of challenges. For one, the software may state that your key is not compatible with the program. This situation is more likely where you are using a push-button start.

If this happens, you can contact the FORScan support, and they will fix the issue on your behalf. Also, be sure to work with the latest versions of the same as they are less likely to have such problems.

Now, let us take a look at the procedure. We will use an example of where you have one key, and the program recognizes two. Say you want to erase the lost key from the program’s memory and add a new one, there is only one way to go about this.

You would have to delete all the known keys. Thus, you start by removing the keys from memory. Then you can program the one that you have and add the new one. Given that you have one key, this is likely to be your situation.

The first step is to access the program and choose the ‘ignition key erase’ option. You then select if you would wish to retrieve the incode from the program or would like to do so from an external source. Once you get the incode, you enter it into the program.

If PATS accepts the incode, the removal of the old keys will take place, and you can now go back to the main menu. Here, you will find that there are no known keys. You can now go ahead and program two keys and to do so, you will use the ‘ignition key programming’ option.

You start by setting the ignition switch to off before using a new key in the ignition and setting it to on. Once you press okay, you can now do the same for the second key to complete the process.

When you take a look at the main menu, the program should show that there are two recognized keys. You must stay on the main menu until you confirm this. Failure to do so will lead to a loss of secure access, and you will have to start from zero.

Ford Chip Key Bypass

Do you want to know how to program a transponder key yourself? Well, let’s get started. You will need to place the plastic end of the key in pliers and remove the head. Ensure that you do not mess with the teeth of the keys as this will affect their ability to ignite the engine.

Then place the head near the ignition, which you can do with a hot glue gun. Ensure that the headsets and then test the ignition with the key. When the transponder is near the ignition, the car will start.

You can now get a spare key and use it to start the vehicle. You can also rewire the ignition completely to bypass the transponder. Note though that this will require some excellent DIY skills.

And do note that bypassing the transponder will negatively affect your car’s security features. Thus, be sure to take safety measures upon carrying out the bypass.

With these steps, you are sure to save a lot of money. Good luck!
